Privacy is the protection of an individual’s personal information. Whether it is to ensure compliance with privacy legislation, protect its reputation or increase consumer trust, organizations have an obligation to safeguard all personal information under their care and control.

CAs are trusted business advisors who can perform a key role in helping your organization address privacy risk. CAs in industry can help establish and monitor privacy policies, systems and controls while CAs in public practice can provide independent advice and assurance regarding the effectiveness of privacy systems and controls.

The CICA has taken a leadership role in raising the awareness of privacy issues and developing resources for its members and businesses. A major initiative has been the development of Generally Accepted Privacy Principles (GAPP) in conjunction with the AICPA. A widely recognized framework which can be used by all organizations, it establishes a benchmark for sound privacy practices that reflects both Canadian and international practices.
