Privacy Resources for Firms and Organizations
Privacy is the protection of an individual’s personal information. Whether it is to ensure compliance with privacy legislation, protect its reputation or increase consumer trust, organizations have an obligation to safeguard all personal information under their care and control.
Chartered Accountants (CA) are trusted business advisors who can perform a key role in in helping organizations address privacy risks.
CAs in industry can help establish and monitor privacy policies, systems and controls, while CAs in public practice can provide independent advice and assurance regarding the effectiveness of privacy systems and controls.
Raising awareness of privacy issues
The Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants (CICA) has taken a leadership role in raising awareness of privacy issues and developing resources for its members and businesses.
Generally Accepted Privacy Principles (GAPP)
A major initiative is the development of Generally Accepted Privacy Principles (GAPP) in conjunction with the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA). A widely recognized framework that can be used by all organizations, it establishes a benchmark for sound privacy practices that reflects both Canadian and international practices.
