The CICA’s involvement in the area of sustainability goes back nearly 20 years, and includes participation in many international and domestic sustainability measurement, accounting and reporting initiatives. For example, the CICA was a founding member of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), whose sustainability reporting guidelines are used around the world. As the Chronology of CICA Sustainability Initiatives shows, the CICA involvement started with a focus on environmental issues, then broadened to address other dimensions of sustainability, and in the last ten years has included a special focus on climate change issues – recent highlights of which are presented on the Climate Change page of the CICA’s website. Accounting for and Reporting on Sustainability An important theme addressed in various ways through the CICA’s sustainability initiatives has been corporate performance measurement, accounting for and reporting on sustainability to capital markets and to other stakeholders. This area of continuing CICA work is summarized in a Media Release, in which the CICA’s President and CEO, Kevin Dancey, emphasizes the importance of making progress on sustainability accounting and reporting, and encourages collaboration on this by all members of the Canadian business, government and investment communities. The Forum of the Prince’s Accounting for Sustainability Project brings the CICA together with international accounting bodies, including the Global Accounting Alliance, to advance corporate accounting for and reporting on sustainability.
