IT&IFRS: The European Experience, Part 1 In the first installment of a two part series, we explore the IT issues related to IFRS. We are joined by two experts, Mahmoud Safavi of KPMG and Steen Skorstengaard of Deloitte (see below for their bios), who were in Europe in 2005 where they experienced the IT issues associated with the conversion to IFRS first hand. In this episode, Mahmoud and Steen share their overall experiences with IT and IFRS in Europe. Also, they examine the IT implications of the IFRS rules around Plant, Property, and Equipment (PPE) and Leases. They also share some advice to those organizations that have already completed the gap-analysis between their current accounting rules and IFRS. Biography of the speakers Chris Anderson, CA(NZ), CISA, CMC, CISSP, is a Partner at Grant Thornton Consulting, leading the GTA Business Risk Services practice. Chris has over twenty-four years experience providing information systems audit, control and security advisory services to public sector, corporate and entrepreneurial clients. Chris has significant expertise and experience in information security assessment and consulting services, and practiced fulltime in this area from 1988 to 2002 as leader of the information security advisory services practice of a “Big 4” professional services firm. Mahmoud Safavi is a Senior Manager in KPMG's Advisory Services business, leading the Central Business System Advisory services. Mahmoud has more than 11 years of Business System Advisory experience including 10 years of SAP project and support practice. He was heavily involved with an IFRS conversion at a major German multi-utility organization containing several entities, systems and conversions when he worked in Europe. He has experience across a variety of industries including Multi-Utilities, Consumer Business industries, Waste Management, and Telecommunications.
Steen Skorstengaard is a Partner in Deloitte’s Enterprise Risk Services Group. He is a United States authorized public accountant, who has worked for 17 years in public accounting in Denmark, the United States and Canada. Steen has worked with several large companies and assisted these during the IFRS conversion in EU in 2005. Steen has also led several large SOX and internal audit projects. He is currently leading IFRS Services in Calgary and assists clients with their conversion projects. Steen is an acknowledged speaker on IFRS implementation issues and other related topics
