The Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants (CICA) is a long-time supporter of academic research undertaken both at the CICA and at Canadian universities. Academic research initiatives and activities currently encompass the following: Academic Research Advisory Committee The CICA has recently created an Academic Research Advisory Committee comprising seven members of the academic community. The purpose of the Committee is to facilitate ongoing communications with the academic community with regards to research and guidance matters of importance to the accounting profession. Significant liaison is expected with the CICA’s Knowledge Development Group: CICA support for university research centres (Top) During 2007, the CICA helped to establish the Centre of Excellence in Accounting and Reporting for Co-operatives (CEARC) at the Sobey School of Business, Saint Mary’s University. The Centre is a collaborative effort involving partnering with other researchers and universities. It will undertake international research on member economic participation in co-operatives and address associated accounting and reporting issues. In 2005, the CICA and the Institute of Chartered Accountants of British Columbia provided contributions to establish a Centre for Corporate Governance and Risk Management at Simon Fraser University's new Segal Graduate School of Business (see press release). The Centre will pursue and disseminate research on best practices for corporate governance and risk management and will also provide educational programs, forums and conferences related to these topics. In 2002, HEC Montréal created the Chair of Governance and Forensic Accounting with financial support from the CICA. Since then, the Chair has developed an international Research Alliance comprising professors from over 15 universities in Canada and Europe, as well as international partners from the world of business. In 1998, the Centre for Information Systems Assurance (CISA) was founded by the School of Accountancy at the University of Waterloo, the CICA and the Information Systems Audit and Control Association (ISACA). The Centre’s objective is to improve the quality of education and research in information systems assurance, governance and control. Academic Research on Capital Markets (Top) The Capital Markets Leadership Task Force (CMLTF) comprises a common interest group of stakeholders administered by the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants. The CMLTF commissioned J. Efrim Boritz, FCA, to prepare a Discussion Paper on "Maintaining Quality Capital Markets Through Quality Information." The Discussion Paper portrays the current environment and proposes ideas for enhancing financial information in Canada’s capital markets. CICA research grant program (Top) The CICA research grant program is administered by the Canadian Academic Accounting Association (CAAA). The broad purpose of this program is to encourage Canadian academics to undertake projects of relevance to the accounting profession. The program offers two grants of up to $10,000 each, awarded on a competitive basis to accounting researchers in response to a Call for Proposals.
