Leadership in Corporate Governance A Strategic Association
The main objectives of the CICA's strategic relationship with the Institute of Corporate Directors (ICD) are to maintain and enhance the skills of those providing corporate governance in Canada. By educating directors to be aware of their responsibilities and liabilities and helping them to appreciate the need to constantly update their knowledge of corporate governance, the ICD has become an influential organization for the continuing development of business leaders. Through its many programs, the ICD provides directors with the knowledge to encourage innovation and competitiveness, to discharge their fiduciary obligations and to ensure ethical behaviour. ICD membership is valuable for CAs who are directors, CAs contemplating becoming directors, and CAs who advise their clients or employers about corporate governance matters. The ICD was incorporated in Canada in 1982 and acts as a resource to all corporate directors by providing information, education, advocacy and networking. Working from a base of approximately 400 members that includes corporate directors who service corporations of all sizes from the largest public companies to the smallest private firms, the ICD seeks to ensure that the voices of its members are heard by legislators, commissions, and task forces dealing with the issues of corporate governance.
The ICD is affiliated with the Institute of Directors in the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth Association for Corporate Governance where the combined membership is 50,000. ICD also works closely with the National Association of Corporate Directors (NACD) in the United States.
