The Financial Planners Standards Council and the Certified Financial Planner (CFP) Designation

Background

The Financial Planners Standards Council (FPSC) was established in November 1995 to benefit and protect the public and the financial planning profession by establishing and enforcing competency and ethical standards for financial planners who choose to hold the internationally recognized designation: Certified Financial Planner (CFP).

In April 1996 the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants (CICA) became a member of the FPSC. In addition to the CICA, the FPSC has five other partner organizations whose members also deal with the personal finances of individuals:

  • Canadian Institute of Financial Planning (CIFP)
  • Certified General Accountants Association of Canada (CGA Canada)
  • Certified Management Accountants of Canada (CMA Canada)
  • Credit Union Institute of Canada (CUIC)
  • Financial Advisors Association of Canada (Advocis)

The Board of Directors of the FPSC comprises a mix of independent directors and representation for the partner organizations.

The President of the FPSC is Cary List, CA, CFP

Obtaining the CFP Designation involves four steps: education, experience, examination, and ethics.
