Business Valuation, CA•CBV

The Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants (CICA) is pleased to announce an accreditation agreement with the Canadian Institute of Chartered Business Valuators (CICBV). The CICA has accredited the CICBV as the only body whose Chartered Business Valuator designation (CBV) leads to recognition as a CA-designated specialist in business valuation.  For details on the agreement please see Objectives below

CAs who are CBVs

CAs who are also CBVs who wish to describe themselves as CA-designated specialists in business valuation and use the symbol CA•CBV must register in the specialty register of their Provincial Institute(s).  Registration is free.  A member must file a declaration that he or she continues to devote a significant percentage of time to business valuation and continues professional development relevant to the specialty.  (In Quebec, the legal environment currently prevents CAs from describing themselves as specialists and using the symbol CA•CBV.)

For information on registering as a CA•CBV see the Declaration Form or contact Marisol Arroyo by e-mail

To become a Chartered Business Valuator (CBV) a CA must:

  • agree to uphold the CICBV's Code of Ethics;
  • successfully complete the required six correspondence courses;
  • provide evidence of the required business valuation experience;
  • file a completed membership application;
  • pass the CICBV’s Membership Entrance Exam (MEE); and,
  • pay the CICBV’s Annual Member Fee.

For more information on the CBV program and eligibility to write the MEE, visit http://www.cicbv.ca.

Established in 1971, CICBV's mission is to promote and develop the profession of business valuation.  Over 1,000 CBVs across Canada apply their skills in a wide variety of areas including business securities valuation, financial litigation support, mergers and acquisitions, and corporate finance advisory services. CICBV membership is granted to qualified professionals who not only must meet specific valuation experience requirements, but also must pass a series of six courses, as well as the Institute's rigorous membership entrance examinations that test competence in and understanding of all aspects of business valuation. CICBV members must adhere to a strict Code of Ethics.

Objectives of the CICA-CICBV Accreditation Agreement

In 2000 the CICA accredited the CICBV as the only body whose Chartered Business Valuator designation (CBV) leads to recognition as a CA-designated specialist in business valuation. Formalizing a long-standing relationship between the CICA and the CICBV, the agreement enhances the value of the services for CAs in business valuation and provides CAs high-value and dynamic career options. The CBV is recognized as Canada's premier valuation designation.

The main objectives of the agreement are to:

  • permit the CICA to recognize the CICBV as an "Accredited Organization" and the appropriate organization to certify CAs as specialists in business valuation;
  • enhance the strategic relationship between the CICA and the CICBV to lead to other cooperative activities in education, research and professional standards;
  • encourage CAs who wish to become specialists in business valuation to become members of the CICBV;
  • ensure that CAs and CBVs are informed on business valuation issues internationally on a consistent basis; and,
  • encourage and facilitate coordination, consultation and cooperation with the CICA and with Alliances for Excellence and other appropriate organizations affiliated with the CICA.

Relationship with the CICA's Alliance for Excellence in Investigative and Forensic Accounting

 There is a significant area of common expertise in the practice areas of Chartered Business Valuators and Investigative and Forensic Accountants. The agreement recognizes these areas of common interest, and proposes ongoing cooperation and exchange of information between the two groups.
