International accounting education standards
International standards for CA education
The Chartered Accountant CA designation represents the highest standards for professional education.
We work closely with universities across Canada to ensure the relevance of undergraduate accounting programs, and accept only high performing graduates into our professional program.
We maintain our own graduate level professional education programs which all CA Candidates must complete successfully to earn their CA designation.
Educational Standards
Our education standards meet or exceed the highest international standards for accounting education.
International standards are set by the International Accounting Education Standards Board (IAESB). The CICA is a member, strong supporter and ongoing contributor to the IAESB standard setting process.
About the International Accounting Education Standards Board
The International Accounting Education Standards Board (IAESB) is a standard-setting body designated by, and operating independently under the auspices of, the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC). IAESB materials are found on the IFAC website.
IFAC is the worldwide organization for the accountancy profession.
The IAESB strengthens the worldwide accountancy profession by developing guidance to improve the standards of accountancy education worldwide.
The Board focuses on three key areas:
- The essential elements of accreditation – education, practical experience and assessment of professional competence
- The nature and extent of continuing professional education needed by accountants
- Studies/papers in accounting education promoting discussion and debate on education and development issues affecting the accounting profession
Exposure drafts
Accounting academics interested in international accounting standards, the IAESB releases exposure drafts. Canadian academics who are interested international exposure drafts can submit their own comments.
The IAESB's objective, scope of activities and membership are set out in its Terms of Reference and summarized in its fact sheet.
